One of my New Year Resolutions is to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. I picked this number because the American Heart association says you should walk 10,000 steps a day in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. At school I easily walk 11,000 steps a day just walking to and from my classes, and I almost always reach 15,000 steps on weekends. It’s really hard to reach my goal while I am on break and home from school because it isn’t necessary for me to walk everywhere here.
While I am home, I am constantly trying to think of ways to reach my step goal. It’s so much more challenging since our roads are not easily walkable and very narrow. My favorite way to get my steps in is to walk my dog one or two times a day.
I received a Fitbit Flex as a High School graduation gift and it is one of the most useful gifts I have ever received. This is one of the more inexpensive products in the Fitbit product line. There’s a tracker for every budget, too. The trackers range from around $60- $250. There are even Fitbits designed by designers like Tory Burch so they actually look like a bracelet!
My favorite part about my Fitbit is actually the app that comes along with it. It tells me a variety of things like my steps, miles, calories burned, and active minutes. It even tracks my sleep and will tell me about my quality of sleep. The best part about the app, though, is that you can compete with your friends and see who can get the most amount of steps in a week. Competing with my friends has motivated me to be active on days when I would rather be a couch potato all day.

What fitness trackers do you like?
Its been exactly a week since New Years Resolutions have been made. Many of us pick the typical: loose weight, be more active, learn an instrument, or eat more healthy. That was the easy part. Now here comes the hard part- actually keeping those resolutions.
We are all guilty of giving up on our resolutions way too soon. This year lets at least try to stick to them.
Here are my tips on making your resolutions stick:
- Make 5 max. resolutions. A mistake many of us make (I know I always do) is to pick too many resolutions. Overload is never the answer. Pick at most 5 resolutions that you really want to focus on and stick with. By focusing on these, you are less likely to get overwhelmed and able to spend more time on each.
- Make a list once a week of tasks relating to your resolutions. If you want to lose weight, it might be “go to the gym and try 2 different fitness classes.” If you want to learn the guitar, it might be ” learn three chords by Friday.”
- Put it in your calendar. Allot a certain amount of time each day/week to your resolutions. Doing this will help you stay focused and on track for success.
- It’s okay if you don’t complete all of them. I know I always get so stressed out over my resolutions because I want to make sure I do all of them. Thats not the point of them though, they shouldn’t stress you out. They are supposed to help you have goals and have fun throughout the year. So, if you don’t complete all of them, don’t worry.
- Have fun! The point is to have fun and do new things. So go out there are kick butt with your resolutions this year.

Studying for exams can be very stressful if kept to the last minute. I:ve noticed that all of my classes seem to have exams all around the same time too, making it even more difficult to study for them all. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the material you have to know. Adjusting to a self disciplined way of studying in college can seem daunting at times, but here are some study tips to help you make it a little easier.
Here are 5 studying tips for your next exam:
Write all of your exams dates down immediately after they are given to you.
I write all of my exam dates in 3 places- my weekly calendar, my cell phone calendar, and homework planner. This way, I know no exam date will slip by under the radar.
Declutter your desk.
Having a cluttered desk can be very distracting when you need to focus. Having anything from makeup to food to other assignments can take away from efficiently learning the material you’re studying. Take away all unnecessary objects from your desk and give yourself plenty of space to spread out your work.
Turn your phone off.
We are all guilty of looking at our phone more often than studying. Looking at your notifications while at your desk takes your focus away from the task at hand. I know first hand how easy it is to get caught up with things on my phone and before I know it, I wasted 30 mins of time I could have used to study.
Make a Study plan.
I try to make a plan for myself. I write down all of the things I need to do before an exam like- read the material, do practice problems for each chapter, and make flashcards. Space these out by explicitly writing down what you are going to accomplish for each day. Something I like to do for this is write down that I will study for 20 mins for X number of intervals. I find that breaking up my studying makes me work harder during those 20 minute intervals.
Light a candle.
Or if your in a dorm like me, get your favorite incense. At home, I would always light my favorite candle (Apple Cider) when study for a big exam. Something about it always calmed me down and made me more focused. Here at school, I keep on my desk a fragrant, organic bar of soap my grandmother sent me for my birthday. The soap is made from eucalyptus and lavender, so it is very calming and refreshing.

We are all guilty of grabbing a pack of cookies on our way out the door because it is convenient and fast. It is very hard to eat healthy with all the tempting fast foods. And its even harder when you are in college or working to have the time to prepare healthy meals. Here are five of my favorite fast and simple healthy snacks for busy days ( or any day really). They all take under five minute to prepare!
I love Avocado because it has such great health benefits. What could be better than sliced avocado on warm toast with smoked chipotle pepper.
PB & J
I revamped the PB & J to be a guilt free sandwich. I used whole wheat toast, almond butter, and fresh strawberries.
Pita & Hummus
I toasted pita bread to go with fresh hummus and garnished with rosemary.
This bite sized snack packs in protein and fiber into a perfect quick snack. I sliced a ripe banana and topped it with peanut butter and either dark chocolate chips or cocoa nibs.
Blueberry Yogurt Dots
Dip blueberries in vanilla yogurt and freeze them. A refreshing (and healthy) treat. Bonus: the blueberries will help you power through late night studying. They give your brain a boost and help retain memory.
